Kailey has been a tattoo artist since 2014, but has been a visual artist for her whole life. She enjoys drawing, cooking, gardening and woodworking when she is not tattooing. She tries to keep her tattoo style diverse, but enjoys blackwork and realism floral pieces the most. She hopes to be travelling for work more often in the future!

Chipping away at taggarts @sfgiants leg sleeve! I LOVE tattooing (any) sports action shots! This is my favorite subject to tattoo after florals.

The second photo in this carousel shows how old tattoos peek through a cover up. At this point its pretty minimal considering how far we've come with this tattoo. I think this touch up was the 3rd pass, which is normal when covering with imagery that isn't galaxy or blackout.

What elephant? 🤷‍♀️

If you want a softer style of tattoo AND a cover up, we will have to be super sneaky. This sunflower worked very well to cover up that elephant!

Like always, this WILL very likely need a touch up to make sure that elephant is gone for good, but as far as a first pass goes, I am super happy!

Could it use a touch up? Yep. Did it cover the really dark old tattoo effectively? Yep.
I am still super happy with it though, that was really fucking hard to cover up!

This tattoo is a good example of what imagery can cover really dark tattoos. This is also a good example of how ink settles in the skin. Its not perfect, but it is a realistic expectation for a cover up of this magnitude.

Im so lucky to have been able to chip away at adding to my clients leg over the years and learn about how ink settles over time. Im so fortunate to have clients like her that keep coming back, its cool to see improvement over years, and to be able to adjust and keep trying to do better with each tattoo.

Do I think that AI has a place in art? Not really. I think that it probably has its benefits somewhere, but just not here.

I started taking my own photographs for tattoos years ago because I didnt want to use the same peony reference that every other realism tattooer was using. Now, this is serving a greater purpose for me. I see so many inaccuracies with flowers in particular on pinterest. (Pinterest has turned into an AI hellscape) The trouble with these images is that the anatomy of most flowers/plants is off, down to number of petals, shape of petals, and colour (To name a few of multiple issues).

The more I started to take my camera out with me, the more I realized that I was allowing myself to slow down and notice how amazing the natural world is around me. It was making me happier day to day. I started tracking when I would see certain flowers, like the prairie crocus pushing blooms out of the snow in early spring. The anticipation for these things is an incredible feeling. Its like going to springs birthday party when you see a blanket of hazy purple over a south facing hill. The feeling is unmatched.

So, what started as a small project for myself has turned into a quiet protest and large passion for the beauty that surrounds us. I urge everyone (especially artists) to start gathering your own library of images. It has turned into one of my most proud achievements as an artist. You dont even need anything crazy to start. Your cell phone camera will do wonders if you take a moment to be with your subject, dont just aimlessly shoot. It gives you a great excuse to take your dog for a walk, join a birding group, or go to the zoo.

My final thoughts in this long ramble is that AI is taking the heart and soul out of art. So, thank you if you've made it this far. Take more photos, and start slowing down. There's so much to appreciate out there, even in your back yard, AI will never make you feel the same way. A prompt + 20 seconds is convenient, but its never going to replace the excitement that you get when you see a wood lily in a ditch, or find a ladybug on your deck railing. I hope you enjoy these photos from last year. ✌️

So, I had a really fun friday the 13th last week! It was such a cool surprise from a client I've been tattooing for a long time. I thought we were just gonna do a session on his sleeve when he mentioned how cool it would be to get a Jason Voorhees tattoo on friday the 13th. How can you pass that up? I cant. This was so fun!
